Massage FAQ

For initial appointments therapists must complete an interview and assessment which can take anywhere from 10-15 minutes depending on the complexity of your case. Afterwards, the therapist will treat you for most of the remaining time. Usually, the therapist will end the massage with roughly 5 minutes left in the appointment. This gives you time to get dressed and for the therapist to re-assess and give appropriate stretches and exercises, if needed. You will need to complete your intake form and COVID-19 questionnaire prior to your appointment. If you have extended health please bring that information with you so that your therapist can direct bill your insurance.
Moments of discomfort are not uncommon during specific treatments however your therapist will describe a detailed pain scale that you are encouraged to use throughout treatment. Therapists will check in with you during treatment to make sure they are staying within your tolerable pain threshold. When you are in pain during a treatment you tend to hold your breath which causes your muscles to tighten and contract which is, usually, counterproductive to your treatment goals. Residual tenderness post treatment can happen but it should not persist past 48 hours. If it does please let your therapist know since that usually means that the treatment was too specific and aggressive. Your therapist can always adjust their treatment style and pressure to your needs and preferences. Remember, communication is key.
RMT stands for Registered Massage Therapist. CMTBC’s definition of an RMT is: “A registered massage therapist (RMT) in British Columbia is a health professional regulated by CMTBC under BC’s Health Professions Act. Applicants for registration with CMTBC have completed post-secondary education in clinical applications of health sciences in massage therapy settings, and must meet CMTBC’s rigorous entry-level requirements.” We are recognized by the province as a part of your healthcare team to address your musculoskeletal needs and concerns. If you would like more information regarding RMT’s code of conduct, qualifications and education please visit www.cmtbc.ca
While skin on skin contact is preferred, for best results, you are not obligated to remove your clothing. Your therapist will work with you at your comfort level and will not pressure you to disrobe if you are uncomfortable doing so.
The frequency of visits will depend on what your treatment goals are. Your therapist will go over this with you in your initial assessment and create a treatment plan with you.
The best treatment length depends on your treatment goals and complexity of your condition. However, a simple method to decide which treatment time is correct for you is as follows: • 90 minute treatment: Full body massage, 2-3 areas of concern and compensatory/secondary areas • 60 minute treatment: Full body massage, 1-2 areas of concern and compensatory/secondary areas • 45 minute treatment: 1 area of concern and compensatory/secondary areas • 30 minute treatment: Focused treatment, usually one area addressed, no compensatory/secondary areas
“Deep tissue massage” is a misnomer since deep is subjective to every individual. What one person considers deep is another’s light. Usually, when people request deep tissue they are asking for specific, focused treatment to an area which we will work towards if that is your goal for the treatment.
